The word yoga means union. The aim of practicing yoga is to unite the finite self with the Infinite Self. For many of us, there comes a turning point when we find ourselves searching for something more to life. There is a desire to discover a deeper level of peace and contentment. This urge comes from our soul and it is the beginning of our quest for self-discovery, our quest for Truth. In essence, it is the beginning of our journey home.
“To change the world is not your business.
To change yourself is not your duty.
To awaken to your true nature, is your opportunity”
The opportunity that is offered to us whilst living on this earth is to find the stillness and absolute freedom that is ever present within our hearts. But how do we find that stillness amidst the busyness of our minds, the intensity of our emotions and the crazy activity and pressures that we find ourselves caught up in? How do we open our hearts again to reveal the light that is always shining within?
“You can have a healthy, happy, holy, wholesome life, a beautiful life in which you can perceive in yourself the contentment of existence”
~ Yogi Bhajan
There are many different practices and teachings that work towards unveiling consciousness and help us to find inner peace. Two of the most powerful and balanced that I have come across are Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan and Shakti Dance® (The Yoga of Dance). I offer regular Kundalini yoga and Shakti Dance® classes in Bristol and Glastonbury and one day workshops around the South West of England. I also run retreats in the UK and in Turkey and am often found in a pair of wellies teaching in various different fields around the UK at the summer festivals!
“Following your bliss is not self-indulgent, but vital; your whole physical system knows that this is the way to be alive in this world and the way to give to the world the very best you have to offer. There IS a track just waiting for each of us and once on it, doors will open that were not open before and would not open for anyone else”
~ Joseph Campbell
Kundalini is awareness, or consciousness: It is the energy of the soul. The Kundalini energy is Shakti energy that is coiled up and stored within an individual – it is that individuals’ creative potential. Shakti is the dynamic, animating force and energy that exists throughout creation. It is the creative feminine energy that brings the manifest world into existence. When practicing Kundalini yoga and Shakti Dance® the aim is to awaken the Kundalini energy and expand conscious awareness thereby bringing us to an awareness of the stillness, the pure sense of “being” that exists within.
